A Little Rag
c. 1’ 15”
This miniature imitates the original ragtime genre, popularized by Scott Joplin. A Little Rag follows the form of a typical rag: the A Section, then repeated, the B Section, then repeated, and the A Section once more. This is where A Little Rag ends, but rags such as the Maple Leaf Rag continue with a C Section and sometimes a D Section.
Image: Night Sky
c. 3’ 15”
This miniature is written in the impressionistic style. Roughly imitating the style of Claude Debussy, Image: Night Sky gives an auditory impression of what one would see while looking up at a night sky full of stars. A consistent “twinkle” keeps the observer grounded.
A Memory Tainted
c. 2’ 30”
A Memory Tainted imitates the music of Danny Elfman—specifically, the music he has written for movies such as “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Edward Scissorhands”. Though written for solo piano, this piece mimics the many musical lines and countermelodies one would hear from an orchestra. The melody of A Memory Tainted is found in the tenor range, as though this piece was written to be sung by a character in a movie.
Opuscula Imitationis was premiered on 5 April 2022 in the Capistrano Concert Hall at California State University, Sacramento, skillfully performed by Ben Gravlee.
